Ditch and Switch: heartburn
The Ditch and Switch is a series in which we look at over the counter drugs and talk about natural alternatives for that particular drug. Today’s topic: heartburn.
What is heartburn?
Heartburn is burning pain or discomfort in the upper chest and midchest, possibly involving the neck and throat, which may worsen when lying down. Heartburn can have causes that aren’t due to underlying disease. Examples include spicy food, alcohol, overeating, or tight clothing.
What over the counter drugs are used for heartburn?
The #1 over the counter drug used for heartburn is Zantac (also called Ranitidine). Zantac belongs to a group of drugs called histamine-2 blockers. It can treat and prevent heartburn. It can also treat stomach ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and conditions that cause too much stomach acid.
Zantac and its generic varieties have come off store shelves after the Food and Drug Administration revealed it found a chemical that could be linked to cancer. The FDA announced that some ranitidine medicines, including Zantac, contained levels of the NDMA impurity. A probable human carcinogen.
And get this… Although Zantac was taken off the shelves, the FDA said it’s not recommending users stop taking the drug. That’s right, the product is taken out of stores but they don’t recommend taking it. Does that make any sense to you at all? Me either.
Ditch and Switch!
Let’s talk about natural alternatives for heartburn problems because there are plenty!
Peppermint essential oil
This is an amazing oil that really supports the stomach and digestive health when taken internally. Put a drop of peppermint in hot tea, in your water, or even in a scoop of yogurt to help ease heartburn. If you can’t stomach it, get yourself some veggie caps. Put 2 drops in it and take it with a glass of water.
You can even get peppermint working through your skin. Massage 3-4 drops mixed with 3-4 drops of Fractionated Coconut Oil and rub over the stomach area. You only need a few drops every time, so one bottle will last you a long time.
Ginger essential oil
Everybody knows Ginger calms the stomach. Much like peppermint, ginger helps support healthy digestion. It is known as a digestive aid to help ease occasional indigestion, nausea, and heartburn.
Ginger is one of those things, you either love it or you don’t. If you love it, it’s simple enough to put a drop in your tea (one drop is enough) or in your water. I simply use 2 drops in a veggie cap and drink it with water.
It’s also a great essential oil to flavor your food with when you cook, which helps prevent heartburn from happening to begin with. Plenty of options with this wonderful oil!
Now, these babies are fairly new and are a staple in our household. These softgels are the bomb diggity when it comes to stomach upset and gastrointestinal issues. Not only does it support a healthy digestive system and a natural solution for heartburn, but it also gets rid of gas, bloating and other digestive difficulties. This is hands down the best natural stomach calmer I have seen in years and used daily in this house.
