Bugs are irritating, no question about it. In order to keep them at bay, we happily cover ourselves in bug spray. We spray it on our skin without even thinking about it. But do you know what is actually absorbing into your skin and bloodstream?
Standard bug repellents you buy at the store contain active and inert ingredients. The active ingredients repel the bugs. The inert ingredients are everything else such as:
- Anti-caking agents
- Foaming agents
Only ACTIVE ingredients are required to be on the label and inerts ingredients are not required to be on the label.
There are many toxic ingredients found in bug spray such as:
They are all toxic and they all can have major consequences for your health. I will discuss the most common one (DEET) below.
DEET is one of the most effective bug repellents and also repels ticks. Large doses of Deet have been linked to:
- Skin blisters
- Memory loss
- Joint stiffness
- Shortness of breath
- Skin irritations
- Crosses into the placenta and is dangerous for unborn babies
- Potential to contaminate groundwater
Think of how often when you are outdoors and apply bug spray. Every time you spray it on you put yourself at risk for any of these symptoms.
