Why your average all purpose cleaner is bad for you
I touched on how bad regular cleaners are for you in my previous post for the DIY Countertop Cleaner. I had to learnt he hard way that regular cleaners had a major effect on my health and wellbeing. In seeking alternatives I found that essential oils are one of the best-smelling and naturally antibacterial options for homemade cleaning recipes. No more exposure to incredibly harmful and toxic cleaners in this household!
Chemicals, are not required to be listed on the packaging of cleaners. We do not know what all-purpose cleaner harmful ingredients are used.
To make them work, all-purpose cleaners that are not green cleaning products may contain one of more of the following toxic and harmful ingredients:
- Alkyl phenol ethoxylates (APEs)
- Glycol ethers
- DEA, MEA and TEA
Carcinogenic coal tar colors are used to make colored products. Hormone disrupting parabens may be used as preservatives. Many cleaners also include toxic fragrances and detergents. Plus alternative brands may contain d-limonene. This is a sensitizer that can also cause respiratory distress as well as liver, kidney & nervous system damage. D-limonene is a hazardous substance, although it is derived from a natural source.
The market for household cleaning products in USA was $61.06 billion in 2018 alone. As we know, advertisements fail to mention that many cleaning products contain toxic chemicals that may actually be harmful to our health. Why would you expose yourself and your family to this? I exposed myself and my family to this until I educated myself on the damage these cleaning products actually do. There is a non toxic and effective (and delicious smelling, if I might add) alternative!
