Summer! 8 must have oils for summer time
We all love summer time! Gardening, swimming, picnicking and vacationing are just a few items on our blissful summer to-do list. Essential oils provide many ways to prepare for, enhance and recover from all of these summer activities. These are my 8 absolutely must-have essential oils for summer time!
Lemon essential oil is good for so many things that it is a must-have for summer! It is a fresh oil that is uplifting and will put you in a good mood immediately. Dirty hands after gardening or greasy hands after you worked on your car that regular soap won’t clean? Put a drop of Lemon oil on a cotton ball and it will easily come off. Lemon is also a natural bug repellent. Put a few drops in your diffuser or diffuser jewelry to keep those pesky mosquitos away at night. Are you out for a lovely family picnic but those pesky bugs won’t leave you or your food alone? Make a (glass) 16 oz spray bottle with 20 drops lemon and 20 drops peppermint, fill it with water and spray it on the ground under your blanket, or wipe off your picnic table with it before putting the food out.
*** Warning *** Lemon is a photosensitive oil. Photosensitivity and phototoxicity apply to the topical use of essential oils only and do not pose the same risks when used internally. When using a photosensitive essential oil topically, avoidance of sunlight is recommended for up to 12 hours after use.
Did you know that Peppermint is by far the best way to keep ants and spiders out of your way? At home, or in your camper or tent, simply place cotton balls with a few drops of peppermint oil around the area where ants are pestering you and they will leave you alone. Peppermint has wonderful cooling properties. Apply it diluted with fractionated coconut oil to the back of your neck and you will instantly cool off. This oil can also relieve itchy skin irritations and aid in digestive problems.
This is your first aid kit in a bottle. I always say: “When in doubt; Frankincense!”. I never leave my house without it. This oil is perfect for any skin issues. Did you skin get into a meeting with something sharp? Ouch! Hit your toe really hard and a beautiful purple work of art is appearing on your skin? Or did you cut your nails and accidentally part of your skin as well? Frankincense to the rescue!
Melaleuca: (tea tree oil)
This oil is a must-have for your skin. Not only does it help with skin irritations but it is also a fantastic oil to add to your moisturizer every day or to put directly on skin imperfections. I add 1-2 drops to my moisturizer daily, and I use it to make my own after-sun spray (you can find the recipe for that on our Facebook group)
Grapefruit is a wonderful, refreshing oil that not only is it very mood lifting but it also supports a healthy metabolism. I add 2 drops to my water bottle every time and it definitely helps me get some pounds off for summer!
Lavender oil is very soothing for the skin and for the senses. I combine it with other oils for my homemade after-sun spray. This oil is very calming and will help those kiddos to go to sleep at night when they are on vacation and in a strange environment. Just put a drop on the bottom of their feet and 1 drop on their pillow and they will sleep soundly.
Another natural bug repellent! But what I love lemongrass most for is my sore and swollen feet and ankles after a good day of hiking. You know that feeling of finally taking your shoes off after a long day on your feet? Rub a few drops on your feet and ankles and your tired feet will feel rejuvenated.
TerraShield Outdoor Blend is a powerful yet safe formula that can be used by every member of the family, outdoors and throughout the home and is a powerful shield against pesky insects. You can actually get the pre-diluted spray that is ready for topical application. I use this blend every summer, especially when I am gardening and those mosquitos and gnats won’t leave me alone. My husband sprays in on top of his cap and bugs will leave him alone. Don’t go into summer without this one!
Those are my 8 absolute must-haves but there are definitely more essential oils that you will want to have around for the summer! We will be discussing all of them in our fun and educational Facebook group, I would love to welcome you there!
