Kids are funny! I remember when my daughter was around 8 years old, she always say she didn’t have to drink water because the pool was already full of water. Kid’s logic can be undeniable but trying to explain to an 8-year-old she has to drink while she doesn’t want to can be challenging. I remember the story that I told her very well. Besides a mom I am also a teacher and over the years I have learned a lot about being creative when you have to explain things to children.
I told her that keeping your body hydrated was very important because if you don’t do that you will start feeling sick. After a jolly “But I am doing fine mommy!” I realized I had to change my tactics without having to threaten her that if she didn’t drink we would get out of the pool and go home. So here is how the conversation went:
Me: “Do you know how you go in the shower and you wash your hair and your body to make everything clean again?”
Daughter: “Yes, I do that every day”
Me: “Yes you do, and do you know how when you are in the shower only your hair and your arms, legs, belly and back get wet?
Daughter: “Yes because I have to make it clean”
Me: “Well the inside of your body needs to be cleaned too because your heart and your stomach doesn’t get wet in the shower, does it? So to clean the inside of our bodies, we have to drink water all the time”.
Daughter: “Mommy please give me the water bottle I need to take a shower on the inside”
Problem solved 🙂
When you’re out there in the hot sun, stay hydrated, and infuse your water with a drop of Lemon, Lime or Grapefruit to give it an awesome flavor. Make sure your kids stay cool and take regular “showers on the inside!”
