Hi there! You must be here because the same thing that happened to me, is happening to you, your curiosity has been awakened! Let me explain what knowledge changed my mind and jumpstarted me in this business.
Multi-level marketing, network marketing, direct sales, 3 different terms for the same thing; a business where a product goes straight from the manufacturer to the customer. I prefer the term direct sales, so that is what I will use here.
We all know people in direct sales. All probably wonderful people with the best of intentions and yet they evoke visions of pushy people that will not leave their friends or family alone, that want you to buy their products or join their team. And either their pushing is going to alter the relationship you have with them, or you cave in to make them happy and then all of a sudden you are on your own and have no idea what to do. Am I right?
It happened to me! Many, many years ago my introduction to direct sales was a pushy neighbor who would not leave us alone until he could come over and tell us all about this wonderful business opportunity he had. I was moderately curious but after listening to his 4-hour (!) enthusiastic sales talk I nearly threw him out of the house. Over the next few weeks, he was relentless in harassing me about making a purchase and joining the company and eventually I had to take some seriously drastic measures to stop it and I was cured from ever joining a direct sales company for life.
No wonder direct sales is often associated with negativity while the truth is that right now direct sales is one of the hottest retail industries in the world and even regular companies are starting to jump on the bandwagon because of the success achieved in direct sales.
The funny thing is that a lot of people do not realize that everything you buy in the store is multi-level marketing, it just has some added levels to it. Instead of going directly from the manufacturer to the consumer it goes from the manufacturer to the dealer/distributor to the wholesaler, to the retailer that has to do a lot of advertising to get it to the end user; the consumer. The advertising budget goes to the owners of TV, radio, newspapers, billboards, internet and commercial model. All of that tacks on 75%, yes you read that right, 75% to the original manufacturing price of the product. It is a no brainer to me that direct sales is absolutely the way to go.
So let’s talk about my specific product here for a minute; essential oils. Why is it that all these products of which their benefits has been documented for thousands of years, and even are described in the bible that are beneficial for your health and wellbeing, are being brought to consumers via direct marketing? That’s a good question and it has a very simple answer; in the United States of America, the FDA (Food and Drugs Administration) is a big player, it’s all about Big Pharma (the big pharmaceutical companies) and money. If people would all of a sudden improve their health and wellbeing, the entire pharmaceutical industry will collapse. This is the same reason our food is allowed to be jacked up with all sorts of chemicals because Lord knows what would happen to the weight loss industry if people would start eating healthy foods only.
I was born and raised in The Netherlands. The things that the FDA allows here to be in everything we consume is illegal overseas. We are poisoning ourselves and we are poisoning our children. Reason enough for me to consider a way to take care of my family the natural way, and empower others to do the same. Take control of your own health and your well-being and take care of your family, the way they used to hundreds of years ago, and put aside your doubts about direct sales.
Here are 7 more reasons why direct sales is the way to go, without question.
Your chances of success are far better in direct sales
Yes, some people fail at it. In direct sales, you will often find that 20% of the people are making 80% of the money. Do you know what? That is exactly the same as my former regular 9 to 5 job , 20% of the people who attend are actively involved and do 80% of the work that needs to be done. It is like that pretty much everywhere.
I’m not surprised that it is similar in direct sales. People are people. Some of the people who fail at direct sales are not motivated, some aren’t cut out for self-employment, some are in the wrong company for them, and some are just not properly trained, the latter being the biggest reason of people failing. People make the mistake of push marketing instead of pull marketing (we’ll get into that when you decide!) but a motivated and trained person in a good company has a great chance of succeeding in their business. Yours truly being an example of that.
On the other hand, if you start a “traditional” business your odds of success are much lower. According to the SBA, at least 50% of small businesses fail in their first year and 95% fail within the first five years. So, after 5 years of 12 hour days, in debt up to your eyeballs, you only have a 5% chance of succeeding. For some reason, that just doesn’t do it for me.
The costs to get into a direct sales business are much lower
Most direct sales companies ask for a monthly minimum order to keep an active distributor status, it is true. This is part of what keeps the machine running. It is part of the business operating costs. It may be as much as $300, depending on the company.
Now compare that to the costs of traditional business ownership, like rent, utilities, inventory, insurance, taxes, employees, marketing and advertising, and much more. I think you get the idea.
You don’t have to be rich or go deep in debt to have your own home based network marketing business. It truly is an equalizer, giving everyone a fair chance at succeeding, no matter what the financial background or credit history is.
A direct sales business is easier to run
If you had your own business hopefully you could afford to hire an accountant and a secretary who would keep all your red-tape, paperwork, receipts, bookkeeping and such. If not, you would spend much of your time doing this.
With direct sales, the company you are with handles most of the paperwork. You just need to keep your own financial records for your income taxes. This frees you up to spend your time and energy making money.
A network marketing business is easier to market and promote
Most people who have their own “traditional” business are on their own when it comes to marketing and advertising. They usually try a little of everything to see if something will actually work. Often desperate business owners get taken in by slick sales people, who promise results with their newest expensive advertising scheme.
A direct sales company has a proven marketing system that has been tested and used by many people. They will usually have their own marketing material that can be purchased at a lower cost because they can order in larger quantities.
You get the business training you need to succeed in network marketing
You don’t need to know anything about business to be successful in direct sales. Your company has done all the work and research. They often hire the best marketers in the business to help them develop a training program because really want you to succeed and will do everything in their power to help you.
In traditional business, you have to find the training you need on your own.
With a home based direct sales business, taxes are on your side
There are many deductions you can take with a home based network marketing business that will help you reduce your taxes.
On the other hand, the government (federal, state, and local) all seem to have it in for traditional small businesses. And if you have employees, you are really paying much more for them than their salary, as any employer can tell you.
Network marketing is the future and the hottest retail industry today
Some people say that direct sales is a pyramid scheme. That is not true. A pyramid scheme is illegal because it doesn’t work. There is no product, and thus no value to it. The people at the bottom put money in but the value doesn’t flow down to them. It is a scam because only the people who got in at the top make any money. Most of the people get ripped off. A good example of this is chain letters or the airplane game.
A pyramid is the natural shape of structure for all businesses, including governments. A direct sales organization is no exception. Direct sales is just a new way to distribute and market goods and services. It is the way of the future. Even many huge traditional companies see this and are jumping on board.
