“I have my oils, now what?”
This is a very common question I get all the time, and often from people that are not even my customers. Too many people sell essential oils without the accompanying education on how to use them. I have some answers for you!
There are 3 ways to use essential oils: topically, aromatically and internally. I have written blog posts about that a while ago along with a post on how to properly dilute essential oils. However, when you get your oils, all that information can be very overwhelming and you still don’t know exactly how to use them. So let’s dive into some practical information.
There are certain things that come in handy when you use your essential oils every day.
The easiest way to benefit from essential oils is to use them aromatically via a diffuser. When you start out, test the waters first. Some people love really strong scents. Others easily suffer from sensory overload. Some oils like Ylang Ylang and Lemongrass are really strong, and some oils are less evasive to the nose.
Start with 1 or 2 drops in your diffuser and see how you like it. If you would like the scent stronger then add a drop or two. If the scent is enough or too much, then 1 or 2 drops is a good level for you. Never put more than 10 drops total in your diffuser. When you start diffusing, the scent is much stronger than when the diffuser has been on for a few hours. You get used to the scent which can make you think you didn’t put enough oil in the diffuser. Rest assured it is still diffusing and you are still reaping the aromatic benefits. This is my favorite diffuser because it has up to 8 hours of continuing diffusing. It also has an 18 hour “weak setting” where it diffuses every few minutes. That option is great for those that are very sensitive to the scent or for those that want the benefits for 18 hours straight without having to refill the diffuser. It’s also very pretty, and I always like pretty things in my house.
Since you can’t always have your diffuser with you, diffuser jewelry is a great option. My favorite diffuser jewelry is made by Origami Owl. Not only do I love their sentiment lockets and bracelets because they are totally customizable and interchangeable, but the filigree disk inside the locket holds the oils for days. This makes this diffuser jewelry ideal to wear. I can definitely help you find the right jewelry for you.
There is a lot of diffuser jewelry out there that contains lava rock or felt. The disadvantage of lava stone jewelry is that you rub the oil on the stones and the oils not only can stain your clothes but also comes in direct contact with your skin that can cause serious skin irritations. The disadvantage of lockets that have felt in it is that the felt doesn’t hold the oils very long and it can leak the color of the felt onto your clothes.
Glass Roller bottles:
For topical application of essential oils, you will definitely need glass roller bottles. Why glass? Well, our essential oils are extremely potent and they can damage a plastic container. You will want amber bottles with stainless steel roller balls. Most oils need to be diluted properly prior to applying to the skin with fractionated coconut oil or any other carrier oil. Buy a few at the time because trust me, you will use them. Now if you’re anything like me and you have blends that you use every single day, you will soon find out 10 ml roller bottles empty really quickly. For those blends (for example my sleep blend that I use every night) I use 30 ml roller bottles.
Glass Spray Bottles:
You can use your essential oils as a cleaning agent (protective blend, oregano, and lemon are great for that!) or as an air or fabric freshener. For that, you combine the desired amount of oil of your choice with water in a 16 oz glass water bottle.
Essential Oil Book:
A good book to look up all the options you have with essential oils is a necessity. I highly recommend this wonderful book that covers so many uses for so many oils. If you would like some additional reads, I would get this great book that helps you live an essential life to the fullest!
