When you are in direct sales, you are subject to corporate branding. They often provide the most beautiful images of their products and encourage you to use these compliant images on social media. Here is the problem with that. There are hundreds of thousands other direct sales consultants in the same brand, using the same images, so why would anyone pick to work with you over any of the other direct sales consultants?
This is where we start talking about corporate branding versus personal branding. Corporate branding is all about uniformity and consistency. All the pictures have the same style, it is good for the brand. Imagine that everyone in that brand uses those pictures. You will drown in the pool of uniformity because there is nothing that makes you stand out from the crowd.
There is a lot of buzz and noise on social media and you need to rise above it all to get people to notice you. You need to rise above the crowds where people can see and hear you, and the only way to do that is through personal branding. Personal branding is also about uniformity and consistency, the only different with corporate branding is that it is YOUR uniformity. It took me a while to figure out what my personal branding was and how I could bring consistency into my own brand. I tried many different things and one day it just hit me, and the result is visible on this website.
Personal branding is all about what makes you unique. Think about what makes you stand out in a crowd. What do you want to be known for? I am and have been an educator all of my life. That is what I want to be known for, and that is what I have been known for all of my life, so I created a brand around educating. I posted on facebook asking my friends to give me 5 adjectives that describe me. Mother, teacher, and mentor were the ones that were said the most, so luckily I was already known for what I want to be known for in my business.
I know a girl that owns a direct sales business and she calls herself “the nerdy geek”. That is who she is as a person, and she owns it and built an awesome brand out of it. Another one is a super chaotic total mess but a wonderful, creative, outspoken and super funny genius and she owns it and made it her brand, and it works for her.
We often say “do you”, which simply means, be yourself. Embrace your own uniqueness, your own style, your own silliness with all your flaws and quirks, own it and build a brand with it. Be different, be you, stand out, be a unicorn in a pasture full of regular horses, be a mermaid in an ocean full of regular fish, chase the rainbow, shoot for the stars and rise above all the others to make your voice heard and say “Here I am! Look at me!” because THAT is going to be the key to being successful in rising above all the noise.
I have attended a lot of webinars on this subject. I have gone through lots of online training about personal branding and how to build a business on social media. Many of them never really resonated with me, although the one training about rising above the noise and the crowd (it was a training about eBooks) did stand out with me. I eventually found a place where the atmosphere is awesome and the training and free value you get is priceless. The Socialite Suite is my one stop social media training shop. I have learned most everything I apply to my business there, social media training, personal branding, pinterest, facebook parties and follow ups. We get daily periscopes and facebook groups with tons of free value. So go check them out, tell them I sent you and start working on becoming the unique, colorful and beautiful unicorn you are!
