Why you should not mix business with politics
One guaranteed way to kill your business is to discuss the upcoming election for President of the United States. Here’s why.
I recently became interested in a product that I wanted to know more about. Social media is an open book. I looked up the consultant and saw an insane amount of political posts on her wall that were for starters factually untrue, and really derogatory towards one of the candidates. She went on to call all supporters of the candidate “idiots and morons”
Think about this for a minute. If you post anything supporting a candidate. Or if you post anything against the other candidate. Either way, you’re probably offending half of the country. Our country is more divided than it has ever been because of the candidates we have. Trump vs Clinton. You can’t get 2 candidates that are more controversial than these two are. Not only that, they are polar opposites from each other and do not agree on anything.
This sparks passion in people. They become passionate about a candidate and feel the need to defend them in public. Some people take their passion a bit too far. They make posts in public that are so outrageous that they couldn’t be true if they tried. People feel the need to defend their candidate and go to great lengths to do so. What is the reason to discuss politics in public and for who? Do you think your post is going to change minds?
Assume I am looking for your business and I find you on social media, let’s say facebook. I am curiously browsing through your wall. I want to know a bit about who you are and what you do. After all, we like to do business with people we like and relate to. I bump into a post in which Donald Trump is called an ignorant childish idiot with a temper tantrum. And let’s just assume I am a republican. Do you think that after reading that I will be contacting you about your business and possibly buy your products? Nope, not a chance.
Let’s say I am browsing on the same facebook and I am trying to find out a little bit about you. I bump into a post in which you explain why Hillary Clinton is a murderer. Assuming I am a democrat in this scenario, do you think I will contact you? Do you think I will be inclined to find out more about your business and inquire about your products? Again, nope, not a chance.
Politics, like religion, are a personal thing. In my opinion a private thing as well. Support who you want to support but keep it out of your business! Keep your opinion in your head and don’t display it in public! No matter what you post about politics and regardless of who you support, it will cause someone to go somewhere else. Stay neutral in public and keep your choices off of social media.
